What Monthly Meetings and Individuals
Can Do for Peace
in the Present Situation
Suggestions from NYYM Peace Concerns Committee
Campaign Opposing "War on Terrrorism," Invasion of Iraq
- Solicit the support of other churches, faith groups, and organizations in your efforts, or support theirs.
- Put ads in local newspapers opposing invasion of Iraq. Signature ads are one good kind.
- Write letters to the editor.
- Raise funds to Stop the War.
- Select a symbol to represent opposition to invasion of Iraq and hand out publicly, e.g., ribbon or button.
- Meet with Congresspeople and Senators in their local offices--urge opposition to war with Iraq. Attend Town Meetings and "speak out."
- Keep up to date with FCNL and EPIC sources for the latest information: www.fcnl.org and www.epic-usa.org
- Join in actions sponsored by Voices in the Wilderness www.vitw.org
- Urge that Congress hold hearings, take full responsibility for U. S. warmaking actions.
- Encourage AFSC to set up a tour of Refuseniks and Palestinians to help us understand the Middle East issues.
- Invite Peace Team participants from our Yearly Meeting to speak about their recent experiences--Carolyn Keyes in Burundi, Spee Braun in the Middle East, Jane Simkin in Colombia.
- Share your natural gifts; seek support from your meeting.
- In response to polls favorable to the Administration's war-making policy, tell your representatives: "You are not representing me!"
- Question rhetoric of term "terrorism" used indiscriminately; it can lead to retaliation endlessly.
- Learn to make the argument that war doesn't work. Illustrate from past U. S. wars and military actions.
- Review U. S. history of nonviolent action success stories and share them.
- Tax witness. Support the Peace Tax Fund.
- Send someone from your meeting to a training class for counselors on conscience and war.
- Affirm a positive vision. Acknowledge the need for the U. S. to restore positive relationships with the rest of the world.
- Study HR 2459*--a bill to establish a Department of Peace--dedicated to
peacemaking and the study of conditions that are conducive to both domestic
and international peace. Contact Tom Rothchild for Brooklyn and NY Quarters'
minute of support.
