Our Faith
Although our worship can take us deep within ourselves, the great gift of our faith is that we are actively ministers to one another. The companionship of a Meeting for Worship creates not only a space for profound inward spiritual awareness, but also a trusting home for testing out what we discover. Through -- and sometimes despite -- our diversity of beliefs, forms of worship, and theological ideas, we joyfully witness to the spiritual gifts of each other.
The founder of Quakerism, George Fox, quoted from the New and Old Testament and spoke passionately of his encounters with Christ. Today, Quakers with a core belief in Christ sit comfortably in worship with others who seek the holy in countless other ways. Many Friends identify themselves spiritually as Christian, Buddhist, or Jewish, in addition to “Quaker.”
The unity of our experience is found in the silence of our Meeting for Worship. The shared search for authentic spiritual experience, which most often defies words, is where Quakers meet one another in equality. The miracle of our faith comes from our faithfulness to one another, fed by our Seeking the sacred center in each person. To be sought out in this way transforms our lives, as it magnifies our awareness of our inclusion in the sacredness of all things. This awareness can dissolve the outward complexity of our judgments and differences, as it prepares us to live by and in the truth of Love.
