An invitation from the Fall Sessions Planning Committee: All are encouraged to be part of our community of faith and action.
Information from NYYM Clerk Heather Cook, including the schedule, the agenda, the consent agenda, and the list of nominees to committee service, is here.
Three times a year Friends gather to worship and tend to the earthly and spiritual business of New York Yearly Meeting: once in the spring, once in the summer, and once in the fall. This November 13–15, Fall Sessions are hosted by All Friends Regional Meeting, gathering in South Orange, N.J., on the campus of Seton Hall University, and at Chatham-Summit meetinghouse. The collective wisdom and spirit of our diverse community will bring discernment to our business, which we will bring back to our individual meetings.
As is always the case, the contributions of younger Friends at Fall Sessions are welcome and necessary. Fall Sessions 2009 will include structured programming for 7th through 12th graders, less structured programming for 1st through 6th graders, and childcare for the youngest Friends.
All Friends Regional Meeting is made up of Rockland, Ridgewood, Dover-Randolph, Montclair, and Chatham-Summit Meetings. Relatively close to New York City, we are spread out over a congested suburban area. Because of this, the activities on Friday, November 13, will be devoted to attenders’ finding their hosts and lodging, and getting a good night’s rest to be ready for the sessions on Saturday. These will begin at 8:00 A.M. with registration at the Bishop Dougherty University Center (student center) at Seton Hall University, 400 South Orange Ave., South Orange, NJ 07079. Directions will be found at the end of this article or at the Seton Hall Web site: www.shu.edu/visiting.
The University Center includes the Pirates Dining room, where we will have meal tickets (if that option is selected) that include all-you-can-eat everything (pizza, pasta, carving, stir-fry, omelet, vegetarian, vegan deli, salad, ice cream, and you-name-it stations) for lunch and dinner. Hot drinks will be provided with simple snacks at registration, and beverages during the day.
The registration included here offers several options for accommodations. The Seton Hall Web site, www.shu.edu/visiting, provides a listing of nearby hotels and motels. As is customary, Friends in the region will be opening their homes for guests (the registration form asks for needs and preferences so that the coordinators can match folks up in the best way). Friends are also encouraged to work out their own arrangements with old F(f)riends. For hardy souls with sleeping bags, there is floor-space available with ample parking at Chatham-Summit meetinghouse in Chatham, N.J., and floor space with no overnight parking at Montclair Meeting.

Interstate and suburban rail connections are near, with South Orange Station being a 15–20 minute walk to the campus. The SHU Web site has vast information on all kinds of connections to various modes of transport.

By air—Newark Liberty International airport is the closest one. Pickups can be complicated, especially at rush hour, due to security restrictions on cars waiting, air and surface traffic congestion, and weather. Monorail and light rail systems are available to get passengers from the airport to train stations—Penn Station & Broad St.—in Newark. The NJ Transit trains and buses to and from there are listed on the Seton Hall Web site. Another option is to take a taxi, especially if you are traveling with someone and can split the fare. Taxis are available outside each terminal. There is a dispatcher who will direct you to a cab. Fares are posted and fixed for each destination. Consider also State Shuttle, 800-427-3207, which provides service all over the area from Newark Liberty Airport.
When making pickup arrangements, you need to provide the departure city, flight number, arrival time, and the operating airline name—because there are three different terminals. Cell phones can be very useful.
If you come into La Guardia airport, there are shuttles to the NY Port Authority terminal, where you can get the NJ Transit buses listed on the Seton Hall Web site.
By bus—NJ Transit buses are available from New York Port Authority terminal, NewarkInternationalAirport and Newark Penn Station. Please be sure that the final bus you board goes to the South Orange stop, which is approx 1/5 mile from the campus. Have the taxi numbers from the Web site available, if you prefer not to walk. Check schedules to make sure a particular bus runs on Saturday.
By train—You can get to the university using the Northeast Corridor line and several NJ Transit train lines. Check schedules carefully: some commuter lines do not run on the weekends. You may have to change trains at Secaucus Junction or Newark Penn Station. Be sure that the final train you board goes to the South Orange train stop which is approximately 3/5 mile from campus. (Walking directions are here.) If you prefer not to walk, you may call Maplewood Taxi, 973-762-5700.
