In the 9th and 10th grade group we accomplished our goal of creating a community that was strong, respectful, and felt good. The theme of this week was Equality, and we felt that we lived into it. On Monday morning our group was visited by Kim and Niko Tsocanos, with Original Play. We also got to play lots of games together on the lawn. Tuesday during our period of silence we were read Weslandia (one of the stories we read about equality). Chris DeRoller came to talk to us about the fun at Powell House. Wednesday we read Tolstoy’s “Three Questions.” Then we accompanied the 5th and 6th graders to the beach. While there we learned about conscientious objection from Bill Galvin. For the Fun(d) Fair our group hosted “Friendly Idol,” which was a dance contest. Thursday during meeting for worship we tried our skills at a Tibetan singing bowl. Ruben came to teach us some Spanish and Aymara: “Kamisaki” (Hello, how are you?) and “waliki” (I’m good). He showed us his musical talents at different Bolivian instruments. Leigh Strimbeck came along and had us clap, stomp our feet, and made a loofah turn into a corsage, a soccer ball, a best friend, a sea creature, and a pink eye. Then we split up into groups to invent machines that create equality. Some of us participated in Café Night while others just enjoyed watching. Friday we played games and then joined all the age groups for singing. A few of us joined the worship sharing groups every morning during the week. Finally, we just want to think anyone who helped make this week in JYM as great as it was.
